Limiting Government, Promoting Freedom, Jobs and Growth

My governing philosophy is rooted in the belief that Constitutional rights come from God and not government, and I will do all in my power to protect the liberty He gave us. Too often we see massive over-reach, out of control spending, and unconstitutional ordinances passed by governmental bodies. As a member of the Texas House of Representatives, my commitment will be to expand freedom, not government. Texas is blessed with a great economy, but our economy will only remain strong if we keep regulation at a minimum and make it easier for workers to begin businesses and achieve the American (and Texan) dream. There are some who have an agenda to push bigger government on the private sector, but we must be vigilant to protect the vibrant economic growth we have come to enjoy, especially here in Collin County. Texas has created, in most cases, an environment that is business friendly and allows the marketplace to flourish with a light touch approach of low taxes, eliminating lawsuit abuse, and a regulatory system that is predictable and fair. Good government keeps its citizens free from those that would do them harm or take harmful advantage of the vulnerable, while allowing for growth in ideas, marketplace, and innovation. Good government gets out of the way and lets the free market do its work. A good, thriving, free market will elevate all those who are in the market, including those that are unemployed and underemployed.

Property Tax Bills Keep Climbing – Relief is Needed!

Skyrocketing property taxes are placing the dream of homeownership out of reach for some Texas families right here in House District 89. These increases in property tax bills are simply not sustainable! As I go door to door meeting with voters, I hear more concern about this issue than perhaps any other. As one who is dedicated to fiscal responsibility we must do all we can to provide relief to taxpayers.

Securing the Border to Stop Illegal Immigration

We need the strongest border security possible to protect us from those that would do us harm, traffic in humans, and traffic in drugs. I support whatever means necessary to lock down our southern border whether that means a wall or fence, surveillance technology, armed protection, or a combination of all three. It is imperative that we have a secure border. Illegal immigration impacts our state budget in many ways: our hospitals, education system, community safety, and more. We must, for the safety, protection, and prosperity of our citizens, stop illegal immigration. We're a land of laws, and that includes laws which dictate an orderly process by which people can enter our country. No one, no matter their circumstance, can be allowed to disobey the law. I strongly support the ban on sanctuary cities.

Education for Long Term Success

As a former educator and the mother of two teachers, I understand the need for a strong education system to invest in the future. Collin County and HD 89 are blessed with outstanding schools that contribute to the strong quality of life we enjoy here. We need our tax dollars invested in classrooms where it benefits students and teachers (studies show that only 21% of school funding makes it to the teachers). We should also reduce standardized testing and with it the cost of both making, administrating, and grading those tests. Texas must find a long-term solution to funding our schools, so we can keep Texas out of the courts and instead focus on the classroom. Next session, the current research and recommendations of the School Finance Commission will be presented to the Legislature; I look forward to reviewing and assessing their suggestions for improvement. Robin Hood is a growing problem in House District 89. For example, Plano ISD has 28 cents from every dollar going to another school district without any say in how their tax dollars are spent. Yet, as a taxpayer, it is almost impossible to find out which schools are getting or giving funds to recapture. The system needs revamping so that there is transparency in the process, accountability for the money spent, and to insure our money is being spent in classrooms.   Only then can we understand the needs that are already addressed, any waste that is ongoing, and if our money is being spent wisely.

Ensuring our Religious Freedoms

The First Amendment to the Constitution begins very clearly: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” I believe that everyone should have the right to worship in the way they see fit, and the way they worship should not be encumbered by the government. Our religious liberty freedoms were designed to keep government out of your religion, not keep religious values out of government. I am alarmed at the continued threat against our religious liberties and I will stand against any legislation which seeks to undermine those freedoms. I am proud to be endorsed by key leaders and organizations who are on the front lines in this fight including Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO of First Liberty; Jonathan Saenz, President of Texas Values; and Ann Hettinger, State Director of Concerned Women of America – Texas.

Transportation and Infrastructure

With our expanding population, and to support our growing vibrant economy, we need to build new roads and maintain the ones we already utilize. All taxes collected from gas, inspections, and car purchases must be completely devoted to transportation purposes and not diverted to other budget items. We should eliminate non-core government budgeted items in order to have the funds needed for our roads, schools, and justice system. Toll roads are draining the pocket books of citizens of Collin County at an alarming rate. In one month, my own family racked up a $500 toll bill for our family of five. The state has created this situation by not using the gas tax for its designated purpose: building and maintaining roads. It is time that our state stepped away from having citizens pay a tax to drive on roads in perpetuity.

Protecting the Second Amendment

Our Second Amendment rights are granted to us by the Constitution and must be protected, just like free speech and our other rights. I’ve earned the highest candidate rating possible from both the NRA and Texas State Rifle Association. I'm a proud license to carry owner and I believe that we should have the freedom to protect ourselves and our families.

Defending the Unborn

Our founders penned the timeless truth that all men are endowed with certain unalienable rights, and that among these were Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Without life, no other liberties are possible, and that’s why I am ardently pro-life. I believe that life begins at conception and should be honored until natural death. As a member of the Texas House, I will work to continue the valiant work of our current State Representative, Jodie Laubenberg, in taking a courageous stance on behalf of the unborn. I will oppose any funding of Planned Parenthood.

My Values

I’ve provided you with my stance on several issues, but what is more important is the foundation upon which I live my life. My belief system is simple: as a Christian I believe that God is the source of all truth, wisdom, peace, and life. I accepted Christ as my savior at the age of 9, and was raised to honor integrity and Biblical values. I have been an active member of Prestonwood Baptist Church since 1985, where we direct an adult Bible study class. I have a servant’s heart, and I want to make a difference for good in every arena in which I am called to serve, whether that be my family, my neighborhood, or in the Texas House of Representatives serving this district.
